Creative has launched the new ZiiLABS ZMS-05 SoC (System-On-Chip) that is based on concept of StemCell Computing. According to Creative, the new ZMS-05 processor is inspired by Stem Cells that adapts to form different organs in the body and hence it’s called “StemCell Computing”.  Creative says that each PE (Processor Element) or core in the processor behaves like a Stem Cell and adapts to the task at hand.
The benefits of StemCell approach are:

  • Flexibility – utilizing a breakthrough technology comprising of programmable Processing Elements (PEs) which are basically Software Defined Silicon
  • Scalability – 10 Gigaflops to Petaflops processing power
  • Energy Efficiency – High processing power of the ZMS-05 SoC enables it to perform more in less time, equating to low power consumption

Each ZMS chip consists of 24 PEs and each PE can be programmed individually for a specific task. One ZMS chip can perform up to 10 Gigaflops of calculation and 256 chips could be fitted on a Blade for 2 Teraflops of computing power, which is equivalent to computing power offered by each Tesla C1060 GPU in NVIDIA’s Tesla personal supercomputer. A four GPU based NVIDIA Tesla workstation can cost around $10,000, if Creative’s Zii chips based computers are available for similar price range in future, it will be an interesting competition in personal supercomputer market. The video above describes the working of ZiiLABS ZMS chip.
