VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association) revealed details for upcoming DisplayPort 1.2 standard. The 1.2 update will increase the bandwidth and color depth when compared to DisplayPort 1.1 standard and dual-link DVI. The new 1.2 standard will support near 4K resolution at 60 frames per second, 3840 x 2160 to be precise. The updated standard will also support advanced 30-bit color. The current DisplayPort 1.1 standard is limited to 2560 x 1600 resolution same as HDMI 1.3 and dual-link DVI.
At lower resolution of 1080p, the DisplayPort 1.2 will support 120 frames per second. The extra bandwidth can also allow transfer of two separate high-def images in a stereoscopic 3D effect for displays that support 3D viewing. It is also expected that the new standard will use Apple’s smaller Mini DisplayPort connector as the official standard, which would result in faster adoption in laptop market. VESA will publish the standard in mid of 2009 and products based on the technology should become available in second half of 2009.  With its higher bandwidth and 30-bit color, DisplayPort 1.2 looks all set to become the next generation display interface for computers.
