ZAGG Looking to Partner with Apple to Make Next Generation iPhone WaterproofSubmitted by lalit on January 16, 2012 - 1:22pm.
ZAGG, a company known for their invisibleSHIELD products (screen protectors for mobile device) is bringing a new HZO technology to the market. According to the company, HZO is an innovative technology in device protection from water damage. It uses nano-scale film barrier with special water repelling properties that is applied to the inside of the electronic gadgets making them water resistant. ZAGG showcased the new HZO technology at CES last week with number of different devices from Apple, Samsung and Motorola working in a fish tank. Company’s spokesman told Pocket-lint that they are in talks with all leading electronic manufacturers to bring this technology to as many mobile devices as possible. "We showed the Samsung Chairman the technology with a Samsung Galaxy S that we had coated with HZO and he couldn't believe his eyes," a representative of the company told us. "Samsung is really excited by the tech." ZAGG also told Pocket-lint that they are in talks with Apple and are hoping to bring HZO technology to the next generation iPhone 5. HZO is an interesting technology that brings waterproofing to mobile devices without adding bulk. However, one factor that will decide the scale of HZO adoption will be cost. If it’s too costly most electronics manufacturers won’t bother with the HZO technology. For example, Liquipel offers a similar technology for mobile devices and users can directly mail their devices to Liquipel and get it waterproofed for $60. Most manufacturers won’t add 1/3 of that price to their manufacturing cost. If the price of HZO technology is low enough then only it will see large scale adoption.
