On January 21, 2009 PS3 crossed the 20 million mark, it took almost 2 years and 3 months for Sony to reach the mark. Sony sold 2.841 million PS3’s in Japan, 8.05 million in Europe, 7.754 million in North America and 1.42 million in other markets. Japan and Europe were the fastest growing markets for PS3.
The 20 million number in 2 years looks impressive till it is compared to Wii, which was released after PS3, but by the end of 2 years and three months it would reach 40 million mark. However, when compared to Xbox 360 that sold 14.4 million consoles in first two year it is impressive.
If we compare sales of Xbox 360 with PS3, Microsoft’s gaming console has an upper hand in North America where it sold 10.5 million consoles in first 115 weeks after release compared to 7.7 million for same period of time for PS3. But in Europe Xbox units sales was less than half of PS3, 3.3 million Xbox 360 vs 8.05 million PS3. And in Japan the ratio was 1:5, 0.5 million Xbox 360 to 2.8 million PS3.
Now the bad news for Sony, Xbox sales have again picked-up after Microsoft issued a price cut this holiday season. If Sony doesn’t take steps to control that it won’t be able to surpass Xbox 360 sales.
