AMD Reveals Details About CPU+GPU Fusion ArchitectureSubmitted by lalit on February 9, 2010 - 2:44pm.
AMD has revealed details about their upcoming Fusion chip architecture, which is a hybrid design combining both CPU and GPU on a single chip and AMD calls it “application processor unit” rather than just processor. The processors codenamed “Llano” will be based on Fusion architecture and have four out-of-order CPU cores and a full DirectX 11 compatible GPU on the same chip made using 32nm process technology. AT ISSCC, AMD revealed CPU design that is based on current “STARS” core, but is made using 32nm process technology in place of 45nm. AMD has added new power gating and dynamic power optimization capabilities to the new CPU. Each of the four out-of-order cores has about 35 million transistors and 1MB L2 cache. The CPU will offer sub-3GHz clock speed and power consumption range of 2.5 to 25 watts. AMD didn’t provide any details about the GPU design, but said that they will start sampling the Llano processors in second half of this year and will ship them to OEMs in early 2011. Ars Technica has posted a detailed article about the new CPU design you can read it here.
