Netflix’s CEO Reed Hastings said to Bloomberg in an interview that the company may allow customers to pay solely for online video streaming by late this year or in 2010.
Netflix has more than 10 million subscribers watching video online and the company is aiming to broaden its online video streaming subscriber base by forming partnerships with Microsoft to put Netflix on Xbox 360, companies like Samsung and LG to add Netflix to their TVs and BluRay players and TiVo to add Netflix to its online services.
“We’ve got one singular objective, which is ‘Be successful in streaming,’” said Hastings. “If we do that, that’s a homerun.”
As broadband Internet service becomes more prevalent, streaming video service demand will rise exponentially. It is a good thing that Netflix is taking steaming video seriously. We hope that other big players like iTunes will also start providing streaming video content soon. Otherwise, the streaming video market will be all for Netflix to grab.
