Microsoft today announced that Guinness World Records has officially named Kinect for Xbox 360 the fastest selling consumer electronics device. Previously, iPad launch last year was considered the biggest consumer electronics launches (unofficially), but with over 10 million Kinect units sold in little over four months Kinect definitely has the crown now. And Guinness World Records has put their stamp of approval for the record. In the press release Microsoft stated:

Following one of the biggest launches in consumer electronics history, Kinect for Xbox 360 continued its momentum in 2011 reaching 10 million Kinect sensors sold worldwide to date. Not only were sensor sales an overwhelming success, but Kinect drove significant game sales with more than 10 million standalone Kinect games sold worldwide to date.

One thing to note is that in first two months Microsoft sold 8 million Kinects for an average of 4 million per month, but in last two months January and February they sold only two million units for an average of 1 million per month. That’s a drop of 75% in sales in last two months.
