Apple has filed a patent application for wireless “remote wand” that can be used with future versions of Apple TV. The remote wand will function like the Wiimote that comes with Nintendo Wii by giving precise control over a cursor on the Apple TV screen.

The new wand will use motion detection component such as accelerometer or gyroscope to identify movement of the wand and move the cursor on screen accordingly. Apple says that the wand might also use an optical component for capturing images of the infrared modules that will help it calculate its orientation and distance from the device.

Apple says that by using the remote wand they can add more capabilities to set-top-box interface making it easier to use like a conventional computer while sitting at a distance. The wand can also be used in several new selection techniques making surfing through content easier.

“In some embodiments, the user may provide a selection input by moving wand in a particular manner,” Apple said. “For example, the user may flick wand (e.g. Move wand in circular pattern), rotate wand in a particular manner (e.g. perform a rotation of wand), move wand a particular distance off screen, or any other suitable movement of wand.”

Apple described many ways in which the remote wand can be used to provide input in a massive 64-page filling. AppleInsider has written a comprehensive article covering the remote wand patent filing by Apple.
