Samsung Unveils World’s Thinnest Tablets Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Galaxy Tab 8.9Submitted by lalit on March 22, 2011 - 11:12pm.
Pushed into a corner by Apple’s new iPad 2, Samsung today introduced redesigned Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 8.9. Samsung announced the original Galaxy Tab 10.1 (about 0.5-inch thick) last month, but like every other tablet maker was taken by surprise when Apple announced the new super thin iPad 2 on March 2. Samsung’s executive publicly said that iPad 2 has changed the tablet game again like the original iPad and Samsung is working hard to bring a competitor in the market soon. So after few days of hard work Samsung today came out and announced new Galaxy Tab 10.1 as well as a smaller Galaxy Tab 8.9. Both the tablets are thinner than iPad 2 by just 0.2mm (0.007-inch), it looks like Samsung forced its designers to make the tablet thinner till it crossed iPad 2 to just claim the world’s thinnest tablet title. As we can see it at CTIA 2011 both the tablets are nothing more than non-working model and Samsung is still using the original Galaxy Tab 10.1 to showing the software. Now for specifications, both Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 8.9 feature Samsung’s own TouchWiz user interface implemented on the Android™ 3.0 (Honeycomb) platform. They come with 1GHz dual core processor, up to 64GB of onboard storage, 3-megapixel rear camera, 2-megapixel front camera, WiFi, Bluetooth and microSD card slot. The 10.1-inch model has 1280 x 800 resolution screen with 6800mAh battery and the 8.9-inch model has same resolution screen but with 6000mAh battery. Furthermore, Samsung is not just competing on thinness, but price also the Galaxy Tab 10.1 will cost $499 for 16GB and $599 for 32GB, and the Galaxy Tab 8.9 will cost $469 for 16GB model and $569 for 32GB. Samsung says that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 will come to the market before end of Q2 2011 and the Galaxy Tab 8.9 will ship by summer end. You can check the video of non-working Galaxy Tab models below.
