Nintendo Wii Tops 50 Million MarkSubmitted by lalit on March 25, 2009 - 7:37pm.
Nintendo’s President Satoru Iwata today announced that the company has shipped more than 50 million units of Wii game console in less than three years since its launch in November 2006. This makes Wii the fastest selling console ever, easily beating its competition Xbox 360 and PS3. “Frankly speaking, before the launches of the Nintendo DS and Wii systems, almost no one expected them to reach the current level of mainstream acceptance,” Satoru Iwata told the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. “It’s even beyond what we possible hoped for. The market has expanded as video games have been accepted by more consumers than ever before.” Nintendo announced earlier this month that DS has topped 100 million units and the new DSi, which is only available in Japan since its launch in November 2008 has already sold 2 million units. Both Wii and DS are outselling its competition by a ratio of 3:1 and with launch plans for DSi in Europe and US during month of April these numbers will only increase.
