Apple’s upcoming iPad can already support more than 150,000 applications that are designed for iPhone. But that’s not stopping thousands of developers, publication houses and media companies from developing exclusive content and applications for the iPad. Redesign of applications for iPad is important because it offers four times more screen real estate when compared to iPhone, allowing developers to put more information on the same page. Also like iPhone, iPad will not support flash, which has motivated publication houses and media companies to add HTML5 support to their content specifically for iPad.

Brightcove a company that provides video platform for more than 1000 companies including The New York Times and Time has announced they will be officially supporting HTML5 video for their customers. Brightcove’s CEO Jeremy Allaire said “Our customers want to be able to deliver their video content to every screen without sacrificing the quality, interactivity and monetization capabilities they have come to expect from the Brightcove platform.” Both NY Times and Time have already announced that their applications and websites will support HTML5 video and will be iPad ready by April 3rd – the launch date of iPad.

One of the four major networks CBS has also started working on non-Flash website designed for iPad. The website will have HTML5 videos in place of Flash videos and offer touch friendly interface. It is also rumored that Hulu is planning to added HTML5 support, so that streaming videos from the website can be accessed by iPad users also.

On the magazine front, publications firms like Conde Nast have developed digital versions (video below) of Wired, Sports Illustrated and Time magazines that will be launched on April 3rd along side iPad launch. Other magazine publishers are also planning to launch digital magazines for the iPad. The New York Times and Wall Street Journal have also developed iPad apps that will bring iPad specific features and come with monthly subscription. Both the companies claim that the iPad app will bring all the features of regular newspaper along with added information via interactive multimedia like videos and slideshows.

iPad app market has gained tremendous momentum even before iPad has shipped and the race for application development is so hot that even companies that have products competing with iPad are developing applications for the device. For example, Amazon is preparing Kindle app for iPad, and Barners and Noble is also developing eBook app. Almost every major developer like Sling, Pandora, Adobe, EA games, etc are developing application for iPad. In fact, one developer is developing an application called iMockups for designing application mockups for iPad on iPad.

Analysts believe that Apple will launch the iPad App Store with 10 times more applications when compared to iPhone App Store launch few years back and right now that number looks conservative.
