PrimeSense Behind Project Natal for Xbox 360Submitted by lalit on April 1, 2010 - 8:10am.
Microsoft has announced that PrimeSense supplies 3D-Sensing technology for Project Natal for Xbox 360. The optical sensing and recognition technologies to aid gesture control on Xbox 360 are based on 3D sensing technology developed by PrimeSense. Aviad Maizels, president and founder of PrimeSense said, “Xbox 360 Hardware engineering teams developed the ‘Project Natal’ sensor based on the PrimeSensor reference design to support the special requirements of ‘Project Natal’”. PrimeSense 3D-Sensing technology uses realtime depth, color and audio data of the living room and can work in various lighting conditions whether completely dark or brightly lit. PrimeSense PS1080 SoC (System on Chip) inside Project Natal takes infrared data from the standard CMOS sensor and combines it with audio and color data for accurate 3D optical tracking of the subject. “We’ve seen tremendous excitement and anticipation for the arrival of ‘Project Natal’ this holiday,” said Ilan Spillinger, vice president of Xbox 360 hardware. “PrimeSense has delivered an important component to the technology, helping us deliver revolutionary controller-free entertainment experiences in the living room.” Microsoft will show the Project Natal in action at E3 Expo in June and ship it by end of this year.
