Next Gen iPhone to Use Apple Designed Application ProcessorSubmitted by lalit on April 19, 2010 - 8:43am.
Current Apple iPhones have been using Application Processor (AP) supplied by Samsung. However, latest report from The Korea Times suggest that Apple will start using Application Processor designed in-house in next generation iPhone just like recently released iPad. “iPhone have been using Samsung Electronics-produced APs that were partially designed by Apple engineers. But Apple has decided to use its own AP for its 4G models,” a high-ranking industry executive told Korean Times. Samsung will still produce the AP for Apple iPhone, but it will be completely designed by Apple. The A4 processor in the iPad has proved that Apple is very capable in designing high-end Application Processors with industry leading performance and power efficiency. This is slightly bad news for Samsung but very good news for Apple. It is rumored that Apple will update the iPhone in June and it will feature higher resolution screen, front facing camera, higher megapixel camera with flash, MicroSIM and glass/ceramic back. Also in Apple related rumors DigiTimes is reporting that Apple will use an OLED panel in second-generation iPad. However, their own senior research analyst contradicts the news by saying it’s highly unlikely because of price of the OLED panel. A 9.7-inch LCD panel is available for about $60-$70, whereas same sized OLED panels can cost about $500. Making it impossible to use in a device Apple plans to keep around $500.
