Intel’s Medfield Processors Aimed at Smartphones in 2011

According to a recent presentation given by Intel, the company is planning to launch new processors codenamed Medfield aimed at Smartphone in 2011. Even though, Intel’s present generation Atom processors have relatively lower power requirement, they can’t match the power efficiency required by smartphones that use ARM processors. Intel is aiming to address this problem by launching Medfield processors based on 32nm process technology.

The Moorestown processors will follow present generation Menlow processors that are aimed at UMPC, netbooks and MIDs in second half of 2009. The new processors will see 50X reduction in idle power consumption and will target MID segment. Even with 50X reduction in power requirement these processor will be less power efficient the ARM-11 processors and hence they won’t come in many smartphones.

Moorestown will be followed by next generation of Atom platform codenamed Medfield. These processors will have about the same idle power requirement as an ARM processor. This will make it possible for Intel to target smartphone market in 2011. There is no information available about exact specification of the Medfield processors yet.
