Microsoft Kills Kin Phones

Just few weeks after launch of Kin One and Kin Two, Microsoft today announced that they have cancelled Kin product lineup. Official statement from Microsoft said:

“We have made the decision to focus exclusively on Windows Phone 7 and we will not ship KIN in Europe this fall as planned. Additionally, we are integrating our KIN team with the Windows Phone 7 team, incorporating valuable ideas and technologies from KIN into future Windows Phone releases. We will continue to work with Verizon in the US to sell current KIN phones.”

It is believed that Microsoft cancelled the Kin phones because sales weren’t as strong as expected. Rumors were that Verizon only sold 500 Kin phones since launch and Verizon will stop selling Kin phones as soon as current stock dry up. Both Windows Mobile 6 launch few years back and Kin phone launch this year have been a failure for Microsoft. The upcoming Windows Phone 7 launch later this year is very important for Microsoft, as it will decide their future in mobile business.
