Palm Readying Pre to Compete with iPhone in EuropeSubmitted by lalit on July 9, 2009 - 9:42am.
Palm started shipping Pre last month in US to compete against the iPhone, however for every Pre sold by Palm, Apple is selling about 10 iPhones. To change this ratio Palm has announced that Pre is scheduled to ship in UK, Ireland, Germany and Spain by the holidays. O2 will be exclusive carrier in UK, Ireland and Germany, while Movistar will carry the phone in Spain. In the press release, Palm claimed that in Pre’s first weekend of availability in the US, it broke Sprint’s previous first-weekend sales records. But Palm again forgot to mention any sales numbers, which many analysts estimated to be around 50,000. If the number is true, it is 20 times smaller than iPhone 3G launch last year as well as iPhone 3GS launch this year. In US alone it’s estimated that iPhone 3GS sold around 400,000 units on first weekend. Till now Pre hasn’t been able to achieve the same success, as iPhone has been able to for past two years and a six-month delay in European launch will only make the matters worst. A simultaneous launch in US and Europe might have given Palm a better chance to succeed against the iPhone.
