AMD today launched the new AMD Radeon HD 6990M GPU for laptops, which they claim is the world’s fastest single graphics processor available for mobile users. According to AMD, Radeon HD 6990M GPU is up to 25% faster than any other announced notebook enthusiast GPU (NVIDIA GTX 580M).

"There's always been a belief that when it comes to mobile computing you need to make performance compromises. Today AMD demolishes that myth," said Matt Skynner, corporate vice president and general manager, GPU division, AMD. "The AMD Radeon HD 6990M GPU, which not only packs AMD Eyefinity technology with unprecedented specs, also provides full Microsoft DirectX 11 and Stereo 3D support. Bottom line, this processor is epic and it's here - now."

Some of the technologies that HD 6990M features include CrossFireX, Eyefinity (supports up to 6 displays), App Acceleration, GPU acceleration for Streaming video and HD3D technology. The new GPU features 1120 stream processing units, 56 Texture units, 128 Z/Stencil ROP units, 32 Color ROP units and 2GB GDDR5 memory. The engine clock speed is 715MHz and the Memory clock speed is 900MHz, resulting in 1.6 TeraFLOPS processing power, 115.2GB/sec memory bandwidth, 715-million polygons/sec Polygon throughput, 40 Gigatexels/sec Texel fill rate, 22.88 Gigapixel/sec Pixel fill rate and 91.52 Gigasamples/sec Anti-aliased pixel fill rate.

Alienware, Clevo and Eurocom are the first to bring AMD Radeon HD 6990M based laptops to the market and these laptops are available now. Check out the AMD 6990M Vs. NVIDIA GTX 580M graph below, in which AMD’s new GPU beats NVIDIA top of the line notebook GPU handily in various benchmarks. You can get more information about the new GPU on AMD’s website.
