FaceTime video call feature that Apple introduced with iPhone 4 will be coming to other Apple devices like iPad and iPod touch later this year according to BGR. A reliable source told BGR that Apple is working on a version of FaceTime that will use email address in place of phone number to make FaceTime video calls for devices that don’t support cellular service. BGR wrote:

It’s actually pretty simple… Your Apple ID will be registered with your device/s, and that will allow other Apple devices to start a FaceTime call using your email address. Apple will also reportedly make use of push notifications to deliver these incoming FaceTime connection requests as we have been informed there is a push notification detector tied into the FaceTime frameworks in the new iPhone OS 4.1 beta.

Adding to the above report, 9to5mac posted details about how the whole process will work. The website posted code showing the process of account creation (Apple ID) that will use your email address for account verification and allow users to create a FaceTime username and password. FaceTime on iPod touch and iPad will also allow users to pick Caller ID that will show up on the receiving end as well as provide multiple email address support for same ID.

Apple plans to add the new FaceTime feature to iPod touch in fall when new iPod touch with video camera will be launch. iPad will get FaceTime when next generation iPad will be launch by end of 2010 or early 2011.
