Upcoming BlackBerry 9800 Shows Signs of Signal Attenuation Issue

Apple’s iPhone 4 press conference might not have provided a permanent solution for iPhone antenna problem, but Steve Jobs speech has jump-started signal drop problem for every cellphone maker. Salomondrin.net posted BlackBerry OS 6.0 overview with videos showing new multimedia menu/app, WebKit browser and upcoming BlackBerry 9800 handset. The videos were intended to show how good the new multimedia app and new WebKit browser is on BB OS 6.0 compared to older version of BlackBerry OS and even iOS and Android OS.

For example, WebKit browser on BlackBerry OS 6 scored 208 on HTML5 test compared to 185 scored by iOS and 151 scored by Android device. However, the one thing most people noted in the videos was that holding the upcoming BlackBerry 9800 handset in certain way resulted in signal drop. If you cover the antenna area of the handset while using it the signal dropped from 5 bars to 1-2 bars and this happened many times during the videos. The videos that showed this problem have now been removed from YouTube with following statement “This video has been removed due to terms of use violation.” We all know why or by whose request the videos were removed.

However, the good thing for RIM is that the videos have brought attention to an issue, which could have easily shipped in final product. RIM now has time to rectify the problem before shipping the BlackBerry 9800 handset in September.
