Pioneer revealed that it has developed optical disc with 500GB storage capacity. Pioneer developed the blue laser disc by improving the optical technology used in the 400GB disc it announced last month. The company achieved the 500GB capacity by storing data on 20 layers of 25GB each. Pioneer said that the technology was based on Blu-ray and could be used in future readers that will be able to recognize that amount of data. Pioneer’s multimedia product chief, Brendan Sheridan said the technology isn’t ready for mass production and it would take four to five years to reach market. The company believes that a 500GB disc will allow storage of multiple 1080p movies or back up of large amount of data.
