MacRumors has posted that Apple is prepping for Cinema Display refreshes for the Macworld San Francisco 2009 conference that will take place between January 5th-9th, 2009. The new Displays might use LEDs to eliminate fluorescent backlighting and make the displays more environmentally friendly. The transition to LED backlighting will depend on how fast the industry would adopt LED based LCDs to bring the cost down. Though LED based small-size LCDs up to 17-inch have gotten cheaper with increased use in laptop screens, a large 30” LED backlit LCD can still cost more than $4,000. Making cost a barrier for Apple in bringing LED based LCDs to the market.
