Sony Debuts World’s First Digital Cameras With Back-Illuminated “Exmor R” SensorSubmitted by lalit on August 6, 2009 - 9:20am.
Sony today announced Cyber-shot DSC-WX1 and TX1 first ever digital cameras to use back illuminated ‘Exmor R’ CMOS sensors. The new Exmor R CMOS sensors provide greater light sensitivity by illuminating the backside of the silicon substrate, in contrast to conventional CMOS image sensors based on front illumination technology. The new technology significantly enhances imaging characteristics, including nearly twofold sensitivity and low noise. This approach results in better low light photography and color reproduction. Both WX1 and TX1 offer 10.2-megapixel sensor, HD video recording and Sweep Panorama mode. Other features on the camera include optical image stabilization, 9-point autofocus, ISO sensitivity range of 125 to 3200, 9 shooting modes including 12-scene selection and 10fps continuous shooting mode. The WX1 features Sony G Lens with 5x optical zoom and 2.7-inch clear photo LCD screen, whereas the TX1 has 4x optical zoom and 3.0-inch touchscreen. The WX1 will ship in black color this October for $350 and the TX1 will be available in silver, gray, pink and blue this September for $380.
