Few days back in their SEC filing, AT&T tried to downplay the would be impact caused by loss of iPhone exclusivity agreement. AT&T said “As these exclusivity arrangements end, we expect to continue to offer such handsets (based on historical industry practice) and we believe our service plan offerings will help retain our customers by providing incentives not to move to another carrier.” But a recent survey done by Morpace suggests that lot of people will switch from AT&T to Verizon, if a Verizon iPhone is released.

Morpace surveyed 1,000 mobile phone customers, and found that 51 percent of current Verizon customers wanted to buy a iPhone if it was available on the network. When it came to AT&T, 23 percent AT&T customers were ready to jump ship if a Verizon iPhone was released. The figures for Sprint and T-Mobile customers’ planning to buy a Verizon iPhone was 22% and 20 % respectively.

The worst part of the survey for AT&T was that 47% of current iPhone owners on AT&T would consider a Verizon iPhone and 34% were waiting for the iPhone to become available through another carrier.

Though the survey is small, it’s bad news for two parties AT&T and Android. Even if AT&T loses just 10 percent of their iPhone customers, they will be losing high paying customers with average monthly bill of $100 per customer. As for Android, Verizon is their biggest partner, as it has over 33 percent of US smartphone market and it is the network with most Android devices. In fact, analysts say that over 30 percent of all Android sales come from Verizon. And if 51 percent of those Verizon customers want a iPhone that is bad news for Android.
