OmniVision Reveals Phone Camera Sensor Capable of Capturing 1080p VideoSubmitted by lalit on August 25, 2009 - 5:49pm.
OmniVision today revealed a new image sensor chip OV2710 for mobile devices that could capture 1080p video. The OV2710 uses a 2-megapixel CMOS sensor matching 1080p resolution. This reduces the need to do image cropping required by larger sensor decreasing image noise. Also CMOS sensors perform better than CCD sensors in low light shooting, resulting in a mobile phone camera that is usable even below15 lux. The sensor captures 1080p video at 30 frames-per-second and 720p video at 60- frames-per-second. If you do standard definition (640 x 480), it can capture 120 frames-per-second. OmniVision will ship the OV2710 in September and expects that the sensor will be used in webcams for notebooks and cameras for mobile phones.
