AT&T today released more information about the upcoming MMS service for iPhone 3G and 3GS customers. AT&T said in the press release:

We know many of our iPhone customers are eager for an update on our rollout schedule for Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS). We’ve been working for the past several months to prepare our systems and network to ensure the best possible experience with MMS when it launches – and that launch date is: September 25 for iPhone 3G and 3GS customers. MMS will be enabled through a software update on that day.

The press release clearly indicates that the much rumored iPhone 3.1 update will be released in September and Apple might announce it on September 9th. The MMS won’t cost extra for customers with Text Plans. However, if you don’t have a text plan you will have to pay $0.20 per MMS. You can get more information about MMS service on AT&T’s website.

In other AT&T/iPhone related news, AT&T has updated its 3G network in cities like New York and San Francisco earlier this week, where iPhone customers have been complaining a lot about bad network coverage and dropped calls. AT&T says that it has added the 850Mhz spectrum for 3G service, which should in theory provide better coverage. However reports from both New York and San Francisco indicate that most customers haven’t yet noticed any significant difference in quality of their 3G service.
