Though Nikon has an excellent DSLR lineup they were well behind other camera makers when it comes to compact prosumer cameras like Canon G11. Nikon plans to change that with new Coolpix P7000 their first true multi-functional, high-performance compact camera. Nikon says P7000 incorporates advanced shooting functions with a feel similar to that of digital SLR cameras in a compact, lightweight body.

The P7000 offers 10.1-megepixel, large 1/1.7-inch, RGB CCD image sensor combined with new image-processing engine, EXPEED C2, enabling it to capture high-resolution images with rich tonal expression. The P7000 is also equipped with a number of new functions, including Zoom Memory and Tone Level Information display, which provide greater control over shooting and resulting images. It has a 7.1X optical zoom NIKKOR lens with a zoom range beginning at the wide-angle 28mm focal length.

Other features on P7000 include 3-inch LCD, HD (720p) movie recording, ISO range of 100 to 3200, built in neutral density filter, low noise night mode, noise reduction filter, long exposure noise reduction, RAW support and quick menu dial and exposure compensation dial for faster and easier operation like a DSLR.

Nikon P7000 will ship next month priced $499. Coolpix P7000 is available for pre-order on Amazon. Check out promotional video of Coolpix P7000 below.
