LG today revealed that it has started mass production of 17-inch notebook displays with RGB LED backlighting. LG claims that the new displays are truly color-accurate and they will reproduce up to 105 percent of color gamut. That’s 40 percent more than a typical notebook display with fluorescent backlight available today.  The new LCD will have WUXGA (1920 x 1200) resolution and will boast contrast ratio by at least 30 percent compared to a typical notebook LCD. This will give deeper blacks resulting in more vivid image quality.
The increased color accuracy and better contrast ratio will please AV professionals and gamers. The new display is not only better to look at but is environmentally friendly also. The LED backlight reduces power use and cuts out the use of toxic mercury used in fluorescent backlight. LG says that many customers have already placed order for the new display and LG will also use the display in its own notebooks. One of the customers that buy's 17-inch display from LG is Apple, and it is believed that Apple will introduce updated MacBook Pro very soon. It’s very likely that Apple might incorporate the new display in its professional laptop lineup.
