Palm Releases webOS 1.2 Update for Pre Without iTunes Support

Palm released webOS 1.2 update that brings Amazon MP3 store access, ability to download files using web browser and filtering emails by using search. However, one important feature missing from the list was support for iTunes 9 sync. Apple and Palm have been in a back-and-forth battle for past few months over iTunes sync support on Palm Pre.

It looks like the latest hammering that Palm received from USB Forum, regarding use of Apple’s USB Vendor ID to hack iTunes sync support for Pre, has put the last nail in coffin of Palm Pre’s iTunes syncing feature. USB Forum’s executive director, Traci Donnell said last week, “Under the policy, Palm may only use the single Vendor ID issued to Palm. Usage of any other company’s Vendor ID is specifically precluded. Palm’s expressed intent to use Apple’s Vendor ID appears to violate the attached policy.”

Palm still has the option of developing syncing software like RIM has made for its BlackBerry devices, which syncs iTunes content with their devices without using iTunes syncing feature. Let wait and see if Palm takes the effort to develop the software for its Pre customers who bought the phone thinking it supported iTunes.
