LED maker Kenmos technology anticipates LED backlit unit (BLU) shipments for notebooks to hit a record in the fourth quarter of 2008. The company expects that 70 percent of the shipment will be for high-end models, but the use in budget laptops will also increase.
Two laptop makers Dell and Apple, to whom Kenmos has previously shipped LEDs, have already said that they will use mercury-free LED backlighting as a standard feature. Dell has committed that 80 percent of its total laptop volume will ship with LED as a standard by end of 2009, where as Apple has said that all its laptops will come with LED in 2009. It is also believed that Apple’s redesigned MacBook and MacBook Pro, which it will ship in fourth quarter of 2008, will use LED backlighting.
Kenmos says that the shipments of notebook LED BLU will top 200,000 units in fourth-quarter of 2008, even though the shipment has been falling for past three quarter. It was 200,000 units in first quarter, 160,000 in second quarter and 80,000 in third quarter. If Apple starts using LED BLU made by Kenmos in its upcoming MacBook, the LED shipments will definitely cross 200,000 units in fourth quarter of 2008.
