BlackBerry’s upcoming touchscreen phone will follow the iPhone by giving its users and developers an application store called “App Center”. Additionally, it will try to one-up the iPhone by including the copy-and-paste feature. The App Center will be a portal for third party apps like the Apple App Store but carriers will control it. Though, BlackBerry will host all the applications on a central RIM server, filter will be in place depending on carrier network that is accessing the server. Basically, giving complete control to carriers, who will decide what applications, the consumers can download on their phones.
The App Center will be available via the web browser on the device initially and will only show applications for the particular BlackBerry OS that on the phone. The user won’t be able to reload apps that were already running or resume interrupted downloads as the App Center will be web browser based. Both the installation and deleting of applications will be managed through the apps (web) browser.
RIM has added the copy and paste function to the new BlackBerry Storm by using the dedicated menu button, which lets user issue a copy command. User can they select the starting and ending of the text by touching the screen. Verizon hasn’t announced a date for release of the BlackBerry Storm, but it is believed we will see the handset in first week of November at the earliest.
