In a press release AT&T said that it has taken the steps necessary so that Apple can enable VoIP applications on iPhone to run on AT&T’s wireless network. Previously, VoIP applications on iPhone were enabled for WiFi connectivity. For sometime, AT&T has offered a variety of other wireless devices that enables VoIP applications on 3G, 2G and WiFi networks. AT&T this afternoon informed Apple Inc. and the FCC of its decision.

Apple’s spokeswoman Natalie Kerris welcomed the announcement and said, “We are happy that AT&T is now supporting VoIP applications. We will be amending our developer agreements to get VoIP apps on the App Store and in customers’ hands as soon as possible.”

In relation with AT&T’s announcement, Skype’s president Josh Silverman said, “All of us at Skype applaud today’s announcement by AT&T that it’ll open up its 3G network to Internet calling applications such as Skype. It’s the right step for AT&T, Apple, millions of mobile Skype users and the Internet itself.”

AT&T’s actions are clearly motivated by recent inquire by FCC regarding carrier’s role in regulating Internet traffic on their networks. We hope that FCC would keep the pressure on the carriers to make data services as open as possible.
