Even before Windows 7 is officially released, Microsoft has started working on its successors Windows 8 and Windows 9. According to one of the developers, Robert Morgan, working on Windows 8 and Windows 9, both the upcoming operating systems will have some degree of 128-bit architecture compatibility. Robert’s LinkedIn profile says:

“Working in high security department for research and development involving strategic planning for medium and longterm projects. Research and Development projects including 128bit architecture compatibility with the Windows 8 kernel and Windows 9 project plan. Forming relationship with major partners: Intel, AMD, HP and IBM.
Robert Morgan is working to get IA-128 working backwards with full binary compatibility on the existing IA-64 instructions in the hardware simulation to work for Windows 8 and definitely Windows 9.”

Microsoft has already announced that Windows 8 will be 64-bit only and it is very likely that they will start development of 128-bit architecture. However, we believe that Windows 8 will have very basic 128-bit support when it will be launched in 2012. As there will be no hardware support for complete 128-bit system. Intel has already shown their roadmap for up coming processors till 2012 and they have no plans to adopt 128-bit architecture before 2012. Windows 9 should definitely bring 128-bit to the forefront, as it will be released by 2014.
