OLED Displays Will be Cheaper Than LCD Displays in 2016Submitted by lalit on October 30, 2009 - 2:09pm.
Today, an OLED TV is at least 10 times costlier than a LCD TV. For example, the only OLED TV available on market today is an 11-inch TV from Sony that is priced over $2,000, whereas, for less than $300 you can get a 20-inch LCD TV. However, LG reckons that OLED displays will be cheaper than LCD within 6-7 years. Won Kim, VP of LG Display sales said at FPD 2009 in Japan that in 2016 OLED panels will have 20-30 percent lower cost of material than LCD panels. He believes that the drop in price of OLED panels will be a result of use of low temperature polycrystal silicon material in manufacturing. Till 2012, the OLED panels will have 50 percent higher material cost and 30 percent lower yield than LCD panels. LG plans to introduce their first OLED TV in 2009 and it will be 15-inch in size. For future, LG plans to introduce 20-inch OLED panels in 2010, 30-inch panels in 2011 and 40-inch and over panels in 2012. Also in OLED news, AUO announced that they would start mass production of 14-inch OLED displays next year. The displays will have 100,000:1 contrast ratio, 200cd/m2 brightness and 16 million colors. AUO didn’t say if the displays were aimed for laptops or small size TVs.
