Pioneer is showcasing its super multi-layer optical disc at IT month fair in Taipei. The optical disc has 16 layers and each layer can store 25GB data, totaling to 400GB data per disc. Pioneer says that the super multi-layer disc is based on Blu-ray technology and it uses a breakthrough dielectric material in place of metallic material as reflective layers. The specifications of the pick-up head for super multi-layer disc are same as those required for running Blu-ray disc, and therefore the new multi-layer disc can run on Blu-ray players.
Pioneer is also working on a 20-layer disc that will store 500GB data. The company plans to release super multi-layer read-only disc by 2010, rewritable discs in 2010-2012 and 1TB disc in 2013.
