Verizon has started testing new form of passive fiber optic network, which could theoretically increase the speed of FiOS network by a factor of four. The new technology called XG-PON could offer 10Gbps download stream and 2.4Gbps upload stream, compared to present infrastructure supporting 2.5Gbps and 1.24Gbps respectively. The test was done in Waltham Massachusetts and it also should that the two-network infrastructure could be combined to provide up to 12.5Gbps download speed. Verizon says that by using new XG-PON network it could offer home customers more than 200Mbps download speed and offer business customers up to 10Gbps download speed via direct connection to the FiOS backbone. The XG-PON standard will be finalized by mid-2010 and Verizon will start deployment later that year.
