Sony Developing PS4 with Mainstream MultiCore ProcessorSubmitted by lalit on December 28, 2009 - 6:06pm.
Sony presently uses specially developed multicore Cell processor in PlayStation 3 and because of that many video game developers have complained that game development is relatively hard on PS3 platform. According to PC Watch, to overcome this problem Sony is looking at alternative processor architecture to replace Cell processor. Rumors are that Sony will now focus on more mainstream multicore processor architecture for PS4 and is in talk with various processor design firms including Intel and AMD. Since game console development can easily take more than two years we won’t see the next generation PlayStation 4 until 2012-2013.
