Apple has been using IPS LCD panel in current iPad model, but according to DigiTimes Apple will adopt IGZO (indium gallium zinc oxide) LCD panels instead of IPS panels in next generation iPad. Yenting Chen posted on DigiTimes:
Starting with the new iPads, Apple will utilize IGZO panels from Sharp in order to upgrade the display resolution of the new tablets to full HD level, the sources indicated.
To enter the supply chain of iPads, Sharp has switched some of its capacity for large-size panels to the production of small-size panels for smartphones and tablet PCs, said the sources, adding that Sharp will also continue to roll out its Galapagos tablet lineup in 2012 using IGZO panels.
The two major advantages of IGZO panels are lower cost of production for ultra high resolution displays and higher brightness. And with rumors that Apple will be switching to ultra high resolution (2048 x 1536) display with iPad 3 it is very likely that they will adopt the IGZO LCD panels from Sharp.
