Sanyo announced today that it is developing a new Blue Laser Diode, which will double the storage capacity of a Blu-ray disc and increase the write speed to 12x. The fastest Blu-ray drive available today has 8x write speed and it takes around 10 minutes to write 50GB of data on the Blu-ray disc. The new diode will allow recording of 100GB data on Blu-ray disc in 10 minutes.
The current Blu-ray Diode allows two layers of 25GB on a Disc. The new 5.6mm Sanyo’s compact diode is capable of emitting 450mw, which allows four-layer of 25GB data to be written at 12x speed on a Blu-ray disc. Now the only problem left is that the new diode has yet not reached the prototype stage and it might take up to three years to bring it to the market.
