Sprint has officially launched XOHM WiMAX network in Baltimore, along with WiMAX enabled notebooks from Acer, Asus, Lenovo and Toshiba. All the WiMAX enabled PCs use Intel’s combined WiMAX / WiFi module. Sprint has also released WiMAX devices like Nokia N810, USB WiMAX dongle and WiMAX expresscard.
For home use Sprint has introduced ZTE MAX-206m2 modem/router, which offer both WiMAX modem and networking functionality. Even though, Sprint call XOHM 4G wireless technology the network will only offer 2-4 Mbps downlink and 1-2Mbps uplink. A true 4G network based on LTE will offer 100Mbps network speed, which is 20 times more than what Sprint WiMAX is offering.
Calling WiMAX a 4G network is debatable, but it did offer faster network speeds compared to Verizon’s 3G network when Laptop Mag tested both the networks in Baltimore. Sprint will launch the service in Chicago, Washington D.C., Dallas, Forth Worth, Boston, Providence and Philadelphia later this year.
The WiMAX service will be offered in two versions Home and On-the-Go. The Home service will be priced $25 per month for first six months after which it will be $35. The On-the-Go plan will be priced $30 per month for first six month and will rise to $45 after that. Sprint will have a Pick 2 plan that will include both Home and On-the-Go service for $50 per month for first six month and it will increase to $65 thereafter. A pay-per-day option will also be available for $10 per day.
