Amazon will finally launch their Online MP3 Music Store next month. To compete with iTunes, Amazon will sell DRM free music from Universal for $0.99 where as iTunes sells DRM free music for $1.29. Amazon will also offer variable rate pricing for songs (bad for consumer and good for record companies). Certain back catalog tracks would be offered at 89 cents and the new releases will cost more. Larger labels are said to object to the low price for current music and are reportedly still in negotiations that may push back the opening of the store.
