A new Display technology by Unipixel in which LED lights are on the sides of the screen could double your cellphone battery life. According to Unipixel right now only 5% of the light produced by LCD backlight is actually reaching the screen. The reason being that the light passes through a series of filters and light polarizer’s to create the image on screen. But by placing the LED lights on the sides, it eliminates the need to pass through multiple filters, allowing for a brighter and more energy efficient display. A prototype of this technology based LCD is expected by the end of 2007.
