In a paper published by Stuart Parkin and colleagues at the IBM Almaden Research Center in San Jose, they describe memory that is faster, more reliable and more efficient than a hard drive or Flash memory. The reading speed of the new memory will be 100,000 times faster than flash memory and it can store 100 times more data of data. The memory is based on metal spintronics and like flash there will be no moving part. The two main benefit of the new memory technology over flash is it never wears out and it will be cheaper to manufacture. But you won’t be seeing a 1TB iPod Nano soon as it will take at least 6 years before storage solutions based on this memory will come to market. The video gives more detailed information about the concept and how the memory works.
