Universal Music Group Confirms its Deal With Qtrax for Free Music Downloads

Qtrax a free file-sharing music download service announced in January that it has deals in place with major record labels to distribute music free online. But all major record labels said that they have not authorized Qtrax service to distribute music. That all changed on Tuesday when Universal Music Groups spokesman Peter Lofrumento confirmed that an agreement has been reached but declined to elaborate. Qtrax’s spokeswoman told Associated press “All of UMG’s music available digitally will be available for free, legal downloads on Qtrax.” Neither UMG nor Qtrax announced when the service will start or what terms and conditions will apply for the usage of the free downloads. Nonetheless a major recording label giving music for free does sound very promising.
