Mobile Phone Sales Drop by 22% in US But Smartphone Sales Rise

According to the latest data provided by NPD Group for first quarter of 2008, mobile phone sales were at 31 million, falling 22 percent year over year. The good news was smartphone sales reached 17% of all phones sold compared to 7% year ago. Motorola maintained its No.1 position, even though it share fell from 35% a year ago to 27% this year. Samsung came in second with 18%, third place went to LG with 17%, Nokia was fourth with 8% and the fifth in top five was RIM with 5% market share. In smartphone sales RIM topped followed by Apple’s iPhone in second place.
