With the latest improvement in read/write speeds and continues fall in flash memory cost for Solid State Drives pressure has increased on hard drive manufacturers. To combat this pressure, Western Digital is working on a 20,000 RPM Raptor hard drive that will increase the read/write speed of the hard drive to new levels. The new hard drive will be very similar in design to the recently released VelociRaptor hard drive. The 2.5” drive will use a custom 3.5” case that will be design to have better heat transfer, increased noise reduction and improved vibration damping. It will be needed for a drive rotating at 20,000 RPM in a 3.5” enclosure. The hard drive is in early development stage and my might see a prototype in Q4 2008.
