Google Adds My Location Feature to Mobile MapsSubmitted by lalit on November 28, 2007 - 6:24pm.
Google is adding a new feature to Google Mobile Maps that automatically sets your location even in phones that lack a GPS device. The new beta feature triangulates your approximate location based on nearby cell towers so you don’t have to type in your address. For example you can just type ‘sushi’ rather then typing ‘sushi San Francisco’. The Google Maps will automatically approximate your location based on nearby cell tower. The My Location feature works indoors, uses less battery then GPS does and is faster (mobile GPS can take up to few minutes to get information). The negative side of My Location is its not as accurate as GPS, it can be off by few blocks. According to Steve Lee, product manager for Google Mobile Maps “The performance of the technology, which was developed in-house, will improve the more people use it, We're creating a database of cell tower locations and that database is built from people using Google Maps for Mobile”. The new feature will work with most smart phones except Motorola Q, Samsung Blackjack, Palm Treo 700W and iPhone. I just hope Apple adds this feature to Google Maps on iPhone very soon. FeedBurner |
