Existing MacBooks and MacBook Pros May or May Not Get Multitouch GesturesSubmitted by lalit on February 13, 2008 - 9:57am.
One of the most talked about feature of the new MacBook Air is multitouch gesture such as pinching and swiping. According to an Apple representative the multitouch is entirely software based and existing Macbooks and Macbook Pros can get this functionality by software update. Apple has official not released any plans to add this functionality to existing Macbooks. Addition of advanced multitouch like Macbook Air could be very useful and allow new commands for different programs making them easier and faster to use. Lets hope that Apple releases a software update that adds multitouch gestures to existing Intel based laptops. Update: T3 has removed the article, as the information about multitouch being software based may not be completely true. According to iFixit, the teardown of Macbook Air revealed a dedicated multitouch chip the same chip is used in iPhone for its touchscreen. So it looks like we may not get multitouch gestures on old MacBooks and MacBook pros. Now my question is does the existing Macbook have the multitouch chip, as we can use two fingers to scroll and do secondary click, and if they do then can multitouch be just a software update?
