Napster Launches the World’s Largest DRM Free MP3 StoreSubmitted by lalit on May 21, 2008 - 2:19pm.
Napster, the music subscription service provider on Tuesday launched a la carte download service with DRM free tracks in MP3 format. The MP3 catalog has 6 million DRM free songs more than any other service offering DRM free songs. Apple’s iTunes Music store has more than 6 million songs but most of them are DRM protected. The big four Music labels except EMI have thus far refused to make their catalogs available to Apple DRM free, in an effort to break Apple’s dominant position in music download market. The good thing about this struggle between Apple and music labels is it’s resulting in more DRM free music content online. The new kid on the block, Napster will offer single tracks for $0.99 and most of the albums will be priced $9.95. The songs will be encoded at 256kbps and the downloaded track will include high-resolution album art.
