Apple Might Launch $800 Laptop; More Images of ‘Brick’ MacBook Casing

Submitted by lalit on October 9, 2008 - 8:42pm.

Apple has sent out invites for their 14th October laptop event this morning. As soon as the invite went public, various websites have posted rumors about the upcoming laptops. Some of these rumors might come true as Apple is trying to increase their presence in laptop market.

Yesterday, Engadget posted a spy-shot of the MacBook Pro casing made by the new 'Brick' manufacturing process. And, today Apple.Pro blog has posted three more images of what looks like the new MacBook casing. The shot from the top shows the keyboard view and larger trackpad, which is nearly identical to the current MacBook Air case design. The left side of the case shows ports arrangement and the right side has slot for optical drive.

From the images, it looks like the case has separate top and bottom ends, rather than being curved out of a single piece of aluminum. It is very much possible that both the top and bottom ends are curved out of aluminum block described for Brick manufacturing process. We will find out more when Apple launches the laptops on next Tuesday.

The Inquisitr is reporting that Apple will launch a $800 laptop, their sources in Apple retail chain has informed them, that Apple stores have been given price sheets that list 12 prices points for the new laptop range, with prices between $800 to $3100. Apple currently has 8 price points for its laptop lineup. An increase in number of price point can indicate either new models or more variations of same three models MacBook, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. Anyway, an $800 starting price for Apple laptop does sound really good.

BB Gadgets has analyzed the marketing shot released by Apple today by comparing the size of the Apple logo to the size of the logo in present 15-inch MacBook Pro. They say that the Apple logo on MacBook Pro is 1.5-inch wide, but the logo in the picture appears to be smaller and would be perfect for a laptop under 13-inch wide, which would suggest a 13.3-inch diagonal screen. The laptop in the shot can be the new MacBook or a totally new product.

After Apple's announcement, analysts like Gene Munster have informed their clients that Apple will revamp the entire MacBook lineup and the price of entry-level MacBook will start $899 or $999. Most analysts are not expecting that Apple will add new product to its MacBook lineup, but it is possible that Steve would announce "one more thing".

Onkyo Reveals Wireless Headphone for iPod

Submitted by lalit on October 9, 2008 - 8:01pm.

If you value good quality audio playback and are pained by the awful sound quality of existing Bluetooth headphones, Onkyo has come to your rescue with their MHP-UW2 wireless headphone. Bluetooth compresses the audio to transfer it wirelessly, which results in degradation of sound quality. The Onkyo MHP-UW2 wireless system sends uncompressed audio signal using 2.4GHz digital connection, Onkyo claims that this will deliver true CD quality sound wirelessly.
The headphone comes with a 35 grams transmitter, which is compatible with iPod classic, touch, nano and mini, and has audio inputs for other portable audio devices. The headphone uses lithium-ion batteries for power and they can last for 8 hours of music playback, recharging take about 3 hours. The headphone weighs a comfortable 105 grams including the batteries. Onkyo will start shipping the new MHP-UW2 next month in Japan for Yen 20,000 ($200).

Submitted by lalit on October 9, 2008 - 4:21pm.

Industrial sources are reporting that Acer shipped 3.4-3.6 million notebooks in September this year beating both HP and Dell. Acer sold 1.2-1.3 million Aspire One netbooks and 2.2-2.3 million notebooks in September. According to estimates HP sold 2.5-2.7 million units and Dell reached 1.8 to 1.9 million units.

Toshiba Also Joins the WiMAX Crowd with Satellite U405-ST550W Laptop

Submitted by lalit on October 8, 2008 - 11:14pm.

Toshiba has also joined the WiMAX laptop race with the Satellite U405-ST550W ultraportable laptop that features a 13.3” LCD screen. The Windows Vista Home Premium based laptop will come with Intel Centrino 2 Processor Technology, combined WiMAX / WiFi module, eSATA / USB combo port, webcam with face recognition technology, 4GB RAM and 320GB hard drive. According to Toshiba the laptop is preconfigured to work with XOHM WiMAX service launched by sprint and it will be available soon via ToshibaDIrect.com.  No word on price yet. One thing is surprising that Sprint hasn’t announce any bundle offer that would subsidize the laptop price with a WiMAX service contract of 12 or 24 months.  We believe that we will see those offers very soon as the WiMAX service expanded in more cities.

Sprint Launches XOHM WiMAX Network in Baltimore

Submitted by lalit on October 8, 2008 - 4:59pm.

Sprint has officially launched XOHM WiMAX network in Baltimore, along with WiMAX enabled notebooks from Acer, Asus, Lenovo and Toshiba. All the WiMAX enabled PCs use Intel’s combined WiMAX / WiFi module. Sprint has also released WiMAX devices like Nokia N810, USB WiMAX dongle and WiMAX expresscard.
For home use Sprint has introduced ZTE MAX-206m2 modem/router, which offer both WiMAX modem and networking functionality. Even though, Sprint call XOHM 4G wireless technology the network will only offer 2-4 Mbps downlink and 1-2Mbps uplink.  A true 4G network based on LTE will offer 100Mbps network speed, which is 20 times more than what Sprint WiMAX is offering.
Calling WiMAX a 4G network is debatable, but it did offer faster network speeds compared to Verizon’s 3G network when Laptop Mag tested both the networks in Baltimore. Sprint will launch the service in Chicago, Washington D.C., Dallas, Forth Worth, Boston, Providence and Philadelphia later this year.
The WiMAX service will be offered in two versions Home and On-the-Go. The Home service will be priced $25 per month for first six months after which it will be $35. The On-the-Go plan will be priced $30 per month for first six month and will rise to $45 after that. Sprint will have a Pick 2 plan that will include both Home and On-the-Go service for $50 per month for first six month and it will increase to $65 thereafter. A pay-per-day option will also be available for $10 per day.

The image shows outer casing of MacBook Pro around the keyboard area and it looks like it was made out of one piece of aluminum block. It was rumored previously that Apple has developed a new manufacturing process codenamed ‘Brick’. The process uses lasers and jets of water to carve the Macbook out of an aluminum block (brick). The image looks real, but as always it can be a Photoshop job well done.

HP Plans to Use 13-inch 16:9 Aspect Ratio LCD Notebook Panels in 2009

Submitted by lalit on October 7, 2008 - 9:51pm.

Digi Times is reporting that HP plans to push sales of 13-inch class (13.0 to 13.9-inch) notebooks with 16:9 aspect ratio panels before the end of this year, making 13-inch models mainstream items for 2009. Digi Times’ source said that the shift of focus to 13-inch 16:9 panels would delay HP’s planned fourth quarter launch of 14.0-inch notebook to the end of the first quarter of 2009.
While most notebook makers are focusing on 14-inch 16:9 panel to use in notebooks, as they are widely available, HP decision will be more cost effective. In a 5G LCD plant it will be more economical to produces 13-inch 16:9 aspect ratio panels than the 14-inch models. HP will ship the 13-inch notebooks in Q4 2008 for holiday season.

Pandora’s Daily New User Base has Doubled After Release of iPhone App

Submitted by lalit on October 7, 2008 - 6:52pm.

Pandora’s founder Tim Westergren talked about iPhone’s effect on Pandora during his keynote at Digital Music Forum West conference. Pandora personalized radio streaming service has been popular since its launch. But release of Pandora application on the App Store has doubled the amount of users that Pandora is getting every day, from 20,000 to up to 40,000. According to Silicon Alley Insider there are about 1.5 million iPhone owners using Pandora, which is around 10 percent of total number of listeners using Pandora’s service. Tim also said that he listens to music via iTunes more than he listens to Pandora. According to Tim people won’t switch to Pandora and completely stop buying music, as music industry fears.  He believes that store like iTunes may even benefit from services like Pandora, since the radio streaming service exposes people to new music that they may later buy from iTunes. Overall, it can be mutually beneficial relationship for both the groups.

BerryStore – a Better Alternative to BlackBerry App Center?

Submitted by lalit on October 7, 2008 - 6:02pm.

Yesterday, we got information about RIM’s upcoming App Center, a portal for third party apps. The information revealed two major negative points about the new BlackBerry application store. First, it was controlled by the carriers and second, it was web browser based system.  If you are like most people and you didn’t want greedy carriers to decide, what applications you can have on you BlackBerry smartphone, an alternative just came along - BerryStore. It’s an unaffiliated startup that has launched a competing app store for BlackBerry Apps.
The apps on the new store works on both old and new BlackBerries and across carriers. Also BerryStore is a separate app and is not web browser dependent. You can download the app by visiting BerryStore website on your BlackBerry and once the app is installed you can browse through and get the applications available via the BerryStore. Right now there are about 40 apps available on the store they are all free. The company plans to offer paid apps in future. To compete with RIM’s App Center, the store has to maintain both quality and quantity of applications that are posted on the BerryStore. If they are able to do that, BerryStore can be a serious threat to BlackBerry App Center.

Australian Carrier Telstra Plans to Offer 21Mbps HSPA+ by 2008 End

Submitted by lalit on October 6, 2008 - 10:32pm.

Many carriers including Vodafone and AT&T have said that they will offer faster Enhanced HSPA (eHSPA) aka HSPA+ network before switching to 4G networks. But it looks like Australian carrier Telstra will beat them all and will be one of the first to offer 3G+ network with 21Mbps speed by end of this year. The updated network will be three times faster than the present generation 7.2Mbps 3G network. Telstra will achieve these speeds by using new Ethernet-based network backbone, which will provide true mobile broadband experience.
Telstra will start launching the updated service in Australia this year and some areas will get the service by end of this year. Initially the network will be targeted for use with notebook cards and the company plans to use it with cellphone when device capable of taking advantage of increase speed become available. Telstra plans to further update the network to 42Mbps speed in late 2009 before switching to 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network, which will have up to 100Mbps network speed.

Sanyo Developing 12x Blu-ray Laser Diode that would Double the Disc Capacity

Submitted by lalit on October 6, 2008 - 8:42pm.

Sanyo announced today that it is developing a new Blue Laser Diode, which will double the storage capacity of a Blu-ray disc and increase the write speed to 12x. The fastest Blu-ray drive available today has 8x write speed and it takes around 10 minutes to write 50GB of data on the Blu-ray disc. The new diode will allow recording of 100GB data on Blu-ray disc in 10 minutes.
The current Blu-ray Diode allows two layers of 25GB on a Disc. The new 5.6mm Sanyo’s compact diode is capable of emitting 450mw, which allows four-layer of 25GB data to be written at 12x speed on a Blu-ray disc. Now the only problem left is that the new diode has yet not reached the prototype stage and it might take up to three years to bring it to the market.

Apple Adds New Features to iPhone 2.2 Beta Firmware

Submitted by lalit on October 6, 2008 - 7:27pm.

Apple has started seeding the iPhone 2.2 beta to developers and the company continues the trend of adding new features with each major update.  Even though the release note for the software says, “compatibility testing”, Apple has added at least three new features according to MacRumors.
The first feature is aimed for Japanese iPhone uses and it adds support for emoji icons shown in the above screenshots. Emoji icons are a popular feature in Japanese phones and some analysts have blamed lack of emoji icons as one of the reason for slow iPhone adoption (though there is no proof of slow iPhone adoption).
The second feature is the Google Street View, which was demoed by T-Mobile on the G1 phone and was lacking on the iPhone. The street view in Google Maps allows users to view panoramic street level photographs in select cities.
The last feature allows user to disable the iPhone’s auto-correction. The feature is available via Settings > General > Keyboard. We can’t say whether all three features will make it to the final software release. One feature that we want on the iPhone is voice activated calling and it looks like Apple won’t add it in 2.2 software update also.

Toshiba Showcases Notebook Battery That Recharges 90 Percent in 10 Minutes

Submitted by lalit on October 6, 2008 - 2:38pm.

It has happened to every one of us, when we need to use the notebook on the go there is no power left in the notebook battery. Imagine if there was a battery that would charge 90 percent in 10 minutes, how many problems that would solve. Last week at CEATEC 2008 in Tokyo, Japan, Toshiba unveiled its prototype notebook battery that charges 90 percent in 10 minutes. Toshiba calls the battery Super Charge ion Battery (SCiB) and it uses a new lithium-titanate anode material.
Toshiba has been talking about the new battery technology for almost a year now, but this is the first working prototype that Toshiba has shown.  The use of lithium-titanate improves thermal stability, increase flash point of electrolyte and decrease the possibility of internal short-circuiting and thermal runaway. Toshiba claims that capacity loss has also been improved and the SCiB battery loses only 10 percent capacity after 3,000 cycles compared to around 20 to 30 percent loss in today’s lithium-ion batteries after 500 charge cycles. The company will start mass production of the new battery in 2009.

iPhone Cruises Past the 10 Million Goal and It’s the Top Selling Smartphone in US

Submitted by lalit on October 6, 2008 - 12:05pm.

Members of Mac Observer’s AFB have been tracking the IMEI numbers for the iPhone sold. International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number is a unique 15-digit code assigned to each individual iPhone found in its settings. The members of Apple Finance Board at Mac Observer are maintaining a spreadsheet of iPhone IMEI data points with the purchase date, model and production week.
According to the data from early September Apple was on its eighth TAC, each TAC can register one million iPhones, meaning 8 million 3G iPhones have already been manufactured. The latest IMEI data collected was 9,190,680 – a 8GB black iPhone that was manufactured on September 29 and sold on October 5. AppleInsider says that even if we assume that 1.5 million iPhones are unsold, the data shows that 7.6 million have been sold. That will bring the total number of iPhone sold in 2008 to more than 10 million, the goal that was stated by Apple when they released the iPhone in 2007.
This also means Apple has surpassed the 4 million units estimated by many analyst for iPhone 3G in Q4 2008 that ended on September 30th. If the data is accurate then Apple sold at least 7 to 7.5 million iPhone in Q4, which will make the sales 80 percent above the general consensus.
In other related news, NPD Group is saying that the iPhone 3G is now the second best selling handset behind Motorola Razr 3. According to NPD Group’s research one in three iPhone 3G purchasers switched from other carriers to join AT&T. Verizon suffered the worst hit with 47 percent of new customers who joining AT&T for the iPhone were from the company, followed by 24 percent from T-Mobile and 19 percent from Sprint.
“The launch of the lower priced iPhone 3G was a boon to overall consumer smartphone sales,” said Ross Rubin, director of industry analysis. “While the original iPhone also helped win customers for AT&T, the faster network speeds of the iPhone 3G has proven more appealing to customers that already had access to a 3G network.”
NPD says that the top-selling smartphone between June and August 2008 was the iPhone 3G. BlackBerry Curve in second place, BlackBerry Pearl in third place and Palm Centro in fourth place followed it.

BlackBerry Storm will have Copy/Paste Function and App Center

Submitted by lalit on October 6, 2008 - 10:52am.

BlackBerry’s upcoming touchscreen phone will follow the iPhone by giving its users and developers an application store called “App Center”. Additionally, it will try to one-up the iPhone by including the copy-and-paste feature. The App Center will be a portal for third party apps like the Apple App Store but carriers will control it. Though, BlackBerry will host all the applications on a central RIM server, filter will be in place depending on carrier network that is accessing the server. Basically, giving complete control to carriers, who will decide what applications, the consumers can download on their phones.
The App Center will be available via the web browser on the device initially and will only show applications for the particular BlackBerry OS that on the phone. The user won’t be able to reload apps that were already running or resume interrupted downloads as the App Center will be web browser based. Both the installation and deleting of applications will be managed through the apps (web) browser.
RIM has added the copy and paste function to the new BlackBerry Storm by using the dedicated menu button, which lets user issue a copy command. User can they select the starting and ending of the text by touching the screen. Verizon hasn’t announced a date for release of the BlackBerry Storm, but it is believed we will see the handset in first week of November at the earliest.

Asus Announces It Shipped Record 700,000 Eee PCs in September 2008

Submitted by lalit on October 6, 2008 - 9:56am.

The netbooks are selling like hot cakes, if you check the Amazon’s top 10 laptops list you will see all netbooks except MacBook on number seven position. Asus the company that started the netbook trend is also seeing record sales. The company reported that they shipped 700,000 Eee PCs in September this year, a monthly record for the company. The total shipment for the quarter was 1.7 million. Asus said that they expect similar high sales for coming holiday season, as October and November are traditionally peak months for the company.
Market watchers expect to see a drop in gross margins for Asus’s netbook business with increase in competition. But Asus says that the margins will remain study, as the shipment of the high-end 10-inch models will start to pick up in the fourth quarter. We have normally found the small netbooks difficult to use because of their small keyboard and screen, and limited OS capabilities. But it looks like consumers are finding the low price point of the netbooks very attractive and this holiday season will be all about the netbooks.

‘Brick’ is a New Manufacturing Process for MacBooks

Submitted by lalit on October 4, 2008 - 9:10pm.

The ‘Brick’ was rumored as codename for a new product that Apple will introduce soon. But, 9to5mac is reporting that ‘Brick’ is the codename for a new manufacturing process developed by Apple for upcoming MacBooks. The name Brick is used to refer to a block of high quality, aircraft grade aluminum, which is used in the new manufacturing process.
According to Seth, the new process is totally revolutionary and Apple has spent last few years building it. The process uses lasers and jets of water to carve the MacBooks out of an aluminum block aka Brick. The advantage of using the new process include:

  • Carving out of aluminum eliminates the need to bend the metal and create weak spots or microfolds and rifts.
  • There are no seams in the final product, so it is smooth.
  • Screws aren’t needed to tie the products together.
  • The shell is one piece of metal so it is super light, super strong and super cheap.
  • You can be a whole lot more creative with the design if you don’t have to machine it.

In past, information released by 9to5mac about upcoming Apple products had been very accurate, so we think that this Brick rumor will also come true. Seth from 9to5mac also says that MacBooks are still on target for an October 14th announcement and the press should be getting invites within the next few days.
Earlier today, we reported that new MacBooks will be powered by NVIDIA chipset and they will be released on 14th October. And, now the information from 9to5mac also points to the same date. Based on the latest information from our sources, we are almost certain that we will see new Apple laptops on 14th October.

T-Mobile Triples Its Pre-Order for Google Android G1 Stock

Submitted by lalit on October 4, 2008 - 8:10pm.

T-Mobile has again started taking pre-orders for Google Android G1, which they will ship in November. Customers who have ordered the G1 in the first round of pre-orders will get their phone on October 22nd. To meet the rising demand T-Mobile has tripled the pre-order stock said company’s spokesperson. T-Mobile has increased its estimated sales of the G1 to half million before end of this year. The initial demand was so high that T-Mobile’s website went down and the T-Mobile customer service lines were tied up for hours. T-Mobile’s spokesperson said, “Given the great anticipation and the heavy pre-sale demand for the T-Mobile G1 with Google, we nearly tripled the number of phones initially available for delivery on our October 22 launch date, and have sold through them all.” It looks like the G1 has already had a good start, it will be interesting to see how the sales keep up in coming months.
