AT&T Posts 5.5 Percent Increase in Revenue with iPhone’s Help

Submitted by lalit on October 22, 2008 - 7:53pm.

Yesterday, Apple announced that the iPhone sales surpassed BlackBerry and Apple is now the 3rd largest mobile phone maker based on the revenue. AT&T is definitely cashing on iPhone popularity; the company announced it net income was $3.23 billion up from $3.06 billion in the same period a year earlier.

AT&T activated 2.4 million iPhone accounts and 40 percent of those accounts were for new AT&T customers. That means that around 0.96 million users who bought iPhone were new to AT&T. Overall AT&T added 2 million new subscribers, so basically 50 percent of the new subscribers joined AT&T because of the iPhone 3G. The company also reported 50.5 percent increase in wireless data revenue from Internet access, messaging, e-mail and other related services, total wireless revenue was up 15.4 percent.

The best part for AT&T was that even though it was adding record number of new subscribers, the churn rate – the percentage of customers switching to a rival carrier, dropped to 1.2 percent compared with 1.3 percent in the previous quarter. AT&T’s CEO Randall Stephenson said, “I am particularly pleased with the customers response to the iPhone 3G. The new customers we’re winning are high-value, with attractive revenue and churn profiles.”

AT&T’s iPhone sales figures also show that Apple sold 2.4 million iPhones out of 6.9 million sold this quarter in US. Meaning, Apple sold 4.5 million iPhones overseas, that’s over 65 percent of the total iPhones sold. Showing that iPhone 3G not only had an excellent start in US, but also around the world.

UDC Develops World’s Thinnest OLED Display

Submitted by lalit on October 22, 2008 - 6:40pm.

One of the main features of OLED display is its thinness, many companies have shown OLEDs one tenth the thickness of any display technology used today. Earlier this year, Sony showed its prototype 0.3mm thick OLED screen at Display2008 in Tokyo. Now, Universal Display Corporation (UDC) has developed OLED display that is less than 50 micrometers thick. The new OLED display is not only super thin but also its super flexible and super durable.
To develop the new OLED display, UDC used thin metal foils as the base of the display, because they have great barrier properties and are flexible. Now the company had to develop a flexible “thin film permeation barrier” as the OLEDs can break down when they come in direct contact with water and air. Presently, glass is used, as the film barrier layer and it’s neither super thin nor highly flexible. UDC developed a new material that is both flexible and highly impermeable for the barrier layer.
The combination of all the above technology resulted is a super thin, super flexible and super stunning OLED display that is less that 50 micrometers thick. The technology is in prototype stage and UDC is not giving any expected release date for the new OLED display yet.

NVIDIA Announces GeForce 9400 and 9300 Desktop Chipsets

Submitted by lalit on October 21, 2008 - 10:13pm.

NVIDIA follows its last week’s 9400M laptop chipset announcement with 9400 and 9300 desktop chipset announcement. NVIDIA said that the company was approached by an unnamed computer maker with a challenge to deliver a desktop chipsets that integrates full system I/O and discrete-level graphics performance in one-half the size of previous integrated graphics solutions.
The result of the challenge was GeForce 9300 and 9400 chipsets. The chipsets integrates a 16-core graphics chip with the motherboard that includes all the I/O connections. The chipset will support, CUDA, PureVideo HD, Hybrid SLI, uncompressed LPCM 7.1 audio, Dual DVI, DisplayPort and HDMI.
“We’ve combined the power of three different chips into one highly compact and efficient GPU,” said Drew Henry, general manager of MCP business unit at NVIDIA. “In doing so, we’ve redefined the level of performance people can expect from a motherboard solution to enrich visual computing experiences for mainstream systems. You can now have the performance of a discrete GPU in a small form factor PC.”

iPhone Sales Surpasses BlackBerry; Apple Becomes 3rd Largest Mobile Phone Maker Based on Revenue

Submitted by lalit on October 21, 2008 - 5:40pm.

Apple today announced that they sold 6.9 million iPhone in the quarter that ended in September 2008. iPhone 3G sales surpassed RIM’s total sales of 6.1 million units in last quarter. Year-over-Year iPhone grew more than 500 percent from 1.1 million in September quarter last year to 6.9 million this year. Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO said, “RIM is a good company that makes good products. Beating them is remarkable.” The increase in iPhone sales makes Apple the second largest smartphone maker behind Nokia.
Apple also noted that measured by revenues, Apple has become the 3rd largest mobile phone supplier. Nokia is on top with $12.7 billion revenue and Samsung is in second place with $5.9 billion revenue. Apple is in third place with $4.6 billion revenue followed by Sony Ericsson with $4.2 billion, LG with 3.4 billion, Motorola with $3.2 billion and RIM with $2.1 billion. The remarkable thing about these numbers is that Apple achieved this by selling just one smartphone model the iPhone 3G. All other cellphone makers have at least 10 different models on the market.
With more than 6.9 million iPhones sold, Apple has also achieved their goal of selling 10 million handsets in 2008, more than two months before the deadline. Apple sold more iPhone last quarter than combined sales of iPhone before last quarter. 6.9 million iPhone 3G units were sold, exceeding the total 6.1 million first generation iPhone units sold in five prior quarters. Apple has sold 13 million total iPhones as of September 27, 2008. Another iPhone related new was that more than 200 million apps have been downloaded from App Store. iPhone 3G launch has been just phenomenal for Apple, if growth continues at this rate very soon Apple will be fighting with Nokia for first place in smartphone market.

Submitted by lalit on October 21, 2008 - 3:02pm.

Intel has already announced that it will start shipping desktop and server processors based on the new Nehalem architecture in Q4 2008. The desktop chips would get a new name Core i7, where as the server chips will continue using the same name Xeon. But PC World is reporting that users will have to wait much longer to get their hands on the mobile version of Nehalem Architecture.
Intel said on Monday that the mobile version of Nehalem would be in production beginning in second half of 2009. Intel didn’t give any specific date when the mobile processors will be available commercially. But it’s usually about a month after Intel start mass production. Intel will produce the processor using the same 45nm manufacturing technology used in present generation mobile processors.
Earlier, it was rumored that Intel will start shipping the Clarksfield mobile processors in second quarter of 2009. And if the news is true, the new processor shipment will be delayed by few months, and that should give AMD sometime to catch-up with Intel.

Intel Shows Working MID Based on Moorestown Chipset

Submitted by lalit on October 20, 2008 - 12:12pm.

Intel today showed the first working prototype device based on Moorestown chipset. The new chipset is designed to be more efficient for use in Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) and ultra mobile PCs. Intel has achieved the increase in performance and efficiency by using 45 nanometer manufacturing process and redesign of the core processor. The new core processor is called Lincroft, it integrates main processor with memory controller and a video-encoding engine. The integration eliminates the need of separate Northbridge making the chip smaller, faster and more power efficient.
Intel also announced that it will be working with Ericsson and Option to develop HSPA based 3G chips that will support Moorestown. The 3G chip will be less that one square inch in size making them ideal for use in MIDs. Intel says that the Moorestown chipset will use 10x less power in idle stage compared to its predecessor the Atom processor. For the first time in the video above, Intel’s Anand Chandrasekhar shows a working device based on the new Moorestown chipset. Intel will start mass production of the chipset in 2009 and we will see device based on the new chipset in second half of 2009.
